Newborn Crib Sheets: Baby Bed Security is Essential

Baby memorabilia does not belong in the ‘throw-away society’ of today, we tend to hold on to many of their items. In addition to that, when you are pregnant, there will be a handful amount of people satisfied enough to give you their old nursery furniture and crib bedding. Because babies are expensive business, be grateful for those offerings of baby bedding and baby cribs. When picking bedding and crib for your baby, do a little research to make sure the products are safe and trustworthy.

Your baby’s first bed is very important whether it is Moses basket or a crib. Hand-me-down beds need to be checked for safety issues first, then take some time to refinish them to make them special for your little one. Even if the baby bedding looks untouched, when you receive it you should inspect it for safety. If you are using a wicker cradle, check the ends to make sure there are no loose or broken bits and that all the connections are secure, and always use a new mattress because these wear out quickest. Be careful that you do not have loose threads or pieces of material for the baby to shove into his or her mouth when fitting the skirt.

The drapes should be fixed properly. Loose materials might be caught by the child to put inside the mouth. If the budget allows it is always best to buy new for baby in lieu of safety reasons says the organization of the Juvenile Products Manufacturer’s Association (JPMA), regulating the USA and the British Standards (BS) set in the UK. The products displaying either the JPMA stamp of endorsement or the BS ‘Kite’ symbol have been put to the test to ensure that they satisfy all of the proper safety standards.

Secondhand items are perfectly reasonable as long as you’re sure that the items are safe.  It’s always a good idea to recycle, even items like nursery furniture and baby bedding. Your baby will spend many hours in his crib, so it is important to carefully examine and test it for safety. Please remember the following points when you check your baby equipment for safety. Before anything else, you want to make sure there is no chipped, loose, or dangerous paint and no jagged edges that your baby’s clothes will get caught on. Most importantly check the bars of the crib to assure that they are closer than 2 3/8 inches apart.  The header and footer boards need to be solid having no holes, this will protect your infant from getting his/her head caught. To prevent the child’s crib from shaking or wobbling, always be sure to check for tight joints and fixings. You should be certain that the raising and lowering mechanism for the side rail can be operated with just one hand, and that it stays securely in place when in the raised position. The mattress should be solid and clean and the side rails of the crib should be no less than 22 inches higher than the crib mattress.

A new mattress that would fit in the crib is always better. Nursery bedding may be dangerous if not secured correctly, so be certain to tie the strings of the bumper tightly so that the baby cannot pull the bumper down. Alternatively, just take down the bumper completely. Babies under the age of 12 months should not have access to the following in their cribs:  duvets, quilts, sheepskin or pillows, while use of these items could cause overheating. Place a thermometer in the room in addition to using a combination of blankets and sheets. You will be astonished at a baby’s ability to climb and reach things, so cribs must be kept away from curtains, window blinds, cords, lamps or nearby furniture onto which they might lift themselves.

Please have a safe and enjoyable time with your infant, as they quickly mature.
