Where can you see the sun rise first in continental USA on New Year’s Eve?
This is a question I ponder every time I see that car commercial on TV about the guy who “drives to the eastern most point in US” on New Year’s Eve to be the first to greet the sun on the new year. The scene shows snow so I assume they are speaking of Maine. This would be the eastern most point in continental US. I was thinking that because of the tilt of the earth in the winter, that Florida would probably be the first to see the sun on this day. So, I pull up a sunset calculator on the internet and sure enough. On Dec 27, 2008 East Port, Maine sunrise is 7:37 AM and Miami, FL is at 6:45 AM. Where would a person really need to be in the continental US to see the sunrise first?
First sunrise is at 7:04 EST at the summit of Cadillac Mountain, Maine. Miami Beach, Florida is at 7:07, and Miami is at 7:08. Which sunset calculator did you use?
