Smoke detector’s battery has a ribbon (for easy removal) and a spring loaded latch. What is the latch for?
My smoke detector’s battery compartment has this spring loaded plastic latch / indicator / thingie. When I put a battery in, I push the latch down, and put the battery in place over the latch which holds it down. What is it for?
First I thought it was to help get the battery out, but there is already a ribbon to pull on for that purpose. Second, I thought perhaps it was hooked up so that the alarm could detect a properly installed battery, but when I opened it up, there is no connection to the rest of the unit.
What’s the point?
The latch is designed to prevent you from using the smoke detector without the battery as a back up power supply. If you remove the battery and try to close the compartment door you will find the latch stops the door from closing. Of course you can still use the unit if it connects to a hard wire but the battery door will remain open. I don’t suggest using the unit without both sources of power.
