Nursery Bedding and Baby Precautions
So you’ve bought the crib – congratulations! But now you must be wondering what bedding you’re going to put in it. A large number of bedding sets contain 3 to 6 pieces, but how many of those do you actually need? Most pediatricians now recommend keeping the crib free from any extra bedding, so all you really need is a crib sheet. Crib sets are cute, but since most of the pieces are unnecessary, it’s much better to spend your money on some durable, comfortable crib sheets instead.
Both comforters and crib bumpers are now on the “not recommended” list, because they pose a pretty serious risk of suffocation. Swaddling blankets or sleep sacks are the best alternative to loose blankets and quilts. Sleep sacks have become a commonplace item these days. While a bit difficult to explain to someone who’s never seen one before, a photograph will clear things up instantly. Swaddling blankets have come a long way, with many mow featuring special fasteners to keep the blanket snug. Swaddling can be an excellent way to help a newborn sleep, but it is generally not recommended beyond 6 weeks because of fears it can hinder hip development. If you rock your baby a lot, you might still want a quilt or blanket to wrap around him or her. However, when baby goes in the crib, be sure to take the blanket off.
A foam sleep wedge might seem like a good idea, since it is meant to reduce a newborn’s risk of SIDS. It should be pointed out here that infants are unable to roll onto their tummies until they are about 6 months old. At this point, SIDS risks are considerably reduced anyway. As was already mentioned, any soft crib bedding should be removed from the crib, but the foam wedges are themselves a type of soft bedding.
Other items included in a bedding set can include a window valance, diaper stacker, toy bag, and crib skirt. These can make the nursery look great, but aren’t necessary if you’re on a budget.
If you really care about the look of the nursery (and who doesn’t?), then thing about gender neutral baby bedding like a Hot Cocoa crib set. {It’s much more cost effective because you can use it again and again, regardless of the sex of your next baby.}
