I still feel extremely guilty about putting my dog to sleep in February?
My dog was 13 and she couldn’t use her back legs anymore. She needed help getting around and went blind in one eye. The vet assured us that we were doing the right thing, but I still feel like I am responsible for her death. I can’t help but wonder if maybe she would have gotten better over time or that I failed at taking care of her and gave up.
How do I cope with this? The rest of my family is secure with the decision to put her to sleep, but I still feel terrible.
Thats like saying a 100 year old person with a failing body might get better…short of a miracle it’s just not going to happen. What will happen is the animals health deteriorates further and has to suffer through immense physical pain. The hardest part of being a pet owner is making the decision to end their lives to spare suffering. It is a difficult and emotional choice but ultimately the correct one. If your to feel responsible for anything it is setting your dog free of misery.
