Safe Traffic

Safe Traffic
if “Keeping safe distance equals fewer accidents” then can we enforce it to avoid traffic nightmare?

Well traffic congestion is an everyday thing for most of us. Right? And most of the congestion is because somebody rear-ending somebody else….its a pity we have the luxury of best one-way lanes in the world and yet read-end collisions wreck our lives with traffic nightmares. My thought is…if MADD can educate people against drunken driving, can we gather enough momentum for “Safe Distance Driving” (somebody can come up with a good acronym?) to
1) Decrease the number of traffic incidents and time spent stranded on highways
2) Iron out grid-locks and merging woes
3) Decrease number of deaths on the road
4) and not to mention…no more dents on cars.

Please comment and help spread the word?

The only way to ‘enforce’ this would be to hire more police officers to keep an eye on all the tailgating drivers. Probably not going to happen – nobody wants to pay more taxes to hire more cops and buy more patrol cars.

I would like to see more cops writing tickets for tailgaters, but I seldom even see a cop nailing speeders.

Perhaps if some research were done to understand the reasons why people tailgate, we could change their behaviors. I have my own theories: some people can’t manage their own time well, so they speed to get to their destination, tailgating to hurry those cars in front of them; others don’t want to leave a large space between them and the car in front because some other driver will see the space and pull into it; others just like to drive fast and intimidate anyone in front of them.

Raise the fines for tailgating and that might change driving habits.

Some car manufacturers are designing forward-looking radar or infrared systems which will give an alarm, or even apply the brakes, when the driver is following too close to the car in front. Sometimes called Adaptive Cruise Control.
