Do all rear differentials not have a drain plug and require the cover be removed?
not all of them. some do have drain/fill plugs for your convenience, especially aftermarket differential covers, but most manufacturers dont take the time to put a drain plug in the stamped steel diff cover. that would cost money and they are greedy bastards. lol. but all diffs have a fill plug, typically located somewhere on the top/side of the housing itself and not the cover.
why do you ask? do you need to change your diff fluid? just pop open the cover, leave in the top bolt so the oil “leaks” out without gushing all over you, let it all drain, pull the top bolt and remove the cover, clean out the gunk if there is any, wipe down the mating surface, get some RTV (high temp silicone, typically red/blue/orange and “make” a gasket. works better than a actual gasket, seal it back up, bolt it on and pour in the new fluid through the fill plug. fill it till it starts coming back out of the plug and your good. make sure to follow manufacturer recommendations as to what oil you should use as well as adding “friction modifier” aka whale sperm to it if you have a Posi/ Trac-lock unit.
the only suckass part is paying for the gear oil. that shit is like 15 dollars a QUART!!!!! and you need at least 3 typically or more!!!
