Baby Bedding Sets and Baby Precautions
It only makes sense that when you shop for your baby’s crib, you’ll be looking for bedding, too. A big portion of crib bedding sets contain 3 to 6 pieces, but how many of those do you actually need? Most pediatricians now recommend keeping the crib free from any extra bedding, so all you really need is a crib sheet. If you’re on a tight budget, you’re much better off spending your money on a few high-quality crib sheets than on a bedding set that can’t be used for much more than decoration.
Quilts and crib bumper pads both pose a risk of suffocation, so use them for decoration or just don’t use them. Winter brings worries about the cold, but wearable blankets or sleep sacks are a better choice than a loose quilt. Wearable blankets are sort of like a cross between clothing and a sleeping bag. Swaddling blankets have also come a long way, with many products that aid in getting a snug fit. Swaddling helps some babies sleep better, but others find it constricting and do not like it. Baby will be spending much of his time in your arms, so you might want a quilt or comforter to wrap around him at those times. But just keep in mind that the quilt doesn’t go into the crib when baby does.
Some people choose to use a sleep wedge, which is designed to keep babies off their tummies (believed to increase the risk of SIDS). It should be pointed out here that infants are unable to roll onto their tummies until they are about 6 months old. At this point, SIDS risks are considerably reduced anyway. As was already mentioned, any soft crib bedding should be removed from the crib, but the foam wedges are themselves a type of soft bedding.
Some of the items in a bedding set may not even be bedding – window valances or diaper stackers, for example. These can be very tempting because they match the crib bedding, but your baby will not suffer without them.
But if you do want a bedding set, it’s much more affordable to buy neutral baby bedding like Hot Cocoa baby bedding. {It’s much more cost effective because you can use it again and again, regardless of the sex of your next baby.}
