The Challenge With Baby Bedding
Having a baby fulfills all of the biological needs that God gave the females. For most women this is a wonderful experience, however the real work begins after giving birth. Diapers, formula, Dr.visits, immunization, and sleep are only a few of the things that a new mother must learn quickly while trying to figure out how to manipulate the daily schedule to fit it all in and keep up with everything else.
One other very important item a new mother must take into consideration is the type and style of baby bedding she will be using for her new infant. The foremost rule to remember when choosing bedding for an infant is safety. The second rule is safety. The third rule is safety. You cannot be too careful when using ANY bedding with a newborn infant. Keep safety your number one priority while choosing you baby bedding for you precious new infant. Baby bedding is important for their comfort and their sense of security while sleeping, but you will NEVER want to choose comfort over safety.
SIDS is a major concern for new mothers and a society as a whole when choosing baby bedding. It has been understood that baby bedding has been a contributing factor in SIDS for as far back as can found. If the bedding and /or mattress are too soft the infant can get his mouth and nose covered resulting in him not being able to breath. A newborn will not have the strength to either move him or the bedding to prevent something tragic from occurring.
Choosing a baby bed can be a challenge in itself, with all of the different manufactures and styles to choose from.
Three infant sleepers to choose from include:
1. A bassinet
- A bassinet is usually oblong-shaped, although sometimes round, basket that serves as a bed for an infant
2. A crib or
- A crib is a bed that has high slatted sides for an infant or young child’s safety.
3. A cradle
- A cradle is a small low bed for an infant. Most are either attached to a stand in a manner that allows them to rock, or have rockers attached to the bottom.
When choosing your style of bed for you newborn, take in to consideration, safety of course, your needs, ease of use and style. Be sure to check out the bed you choose for quality workmanship from the manufacture. A quality well made bed for your baby should function well as well as look good and the manufacture will have cut no corners in the product he is selling. Each style of baby bed will present its own set of safety challenges, so you must know what they might be and how you are going to prevent any accidents prior to purchase
Minimal amount of bedding in you’re infants bed will maximize safety. Too many blankets and your infant might get tangled up in them and be unable to move them. If an infant has lack of oxygen from being covered with a blanket or pillow for only a few seconds can result in permanent brain injury, or worse. As your infant grows and becomes stronger and more aware of things around him, you will be able to increase the amount ant style of bedding and pillows you can put in your baby’s bed safely.
The most suitable baby bedding will fit whatever sleeper you have chosen, it should be light and out of a “breathable” material. Something where if the baby gets it over his mouth and nose he will still be able to breath through it. Leave the big fluffy blankets for playtime when he is fully supervised and there are no chances for an “accident”.
Just remember although baby bedding is essential to keep your infant comfortable while sleeping, SAFETY should be your number one concern when choosing what to put in their bed while they are in there with no supervision.
