Infrared Vs Traditional Convection Saunas

The sauna has been enjoyed in its many guises for thousands of years and while the technology has advanced and changed in this time, its uses as a relaxation and health aid haven’t. New research findings and new studies continue to show the detoxification benefits as well as the sauna’s ability to aid weight loss, help blood circulation, and generally improve the look and feel of the body’s muscles and skin. One of the latest and most beneficial advances is the use of infrared sauna, replacing the more traditional convection style saunas.

Sauna Heating Methods

The primary difference between infrared and traditional saunas is the manner in which they offer heat to the body. While a convection or steam sauna heats the environment within the sauna room, an infrared sauna concentrates its efforts solely on heating the body. This offers several advantages. Less heat is required to stimulate the body with an infrared sauna and, in turn, this also means less electricity is used during the heating process. Convection saunas require more energy because a greater percentage of the energy created is lost to the atmosphere and unused in the main process.

Lower Temperature, Greater Comfort

Lower heat means greater comfort for the person inside the sauna. Infrared saunas are especially useful because they allow the user to sit for sustained periods. The increased temperature that is required in a convection sauna means that the atmosphere can quickly become unbearable and even unhealthy after a comparatively short space of time. Longer periods in a more comfortable heat mean greater benefits to the body, making infrared saunas the more desirable and option.

Concentrated Heat

Another benefit of the infrared sauna is that the infrared rays are concentrated specifically on the body. So, while the heat may not be as intensive, it penetrates the skin and the tissue more deeply. This too offers greater health benefits than the more general approach of the traditional sauna. Because a traditional sauna is unable to concentrate its efforts specifically on the person inside, the heat penetration is generally much shallower than enjoyed in a modern infrared sauna. This is why greater levels of heat are required from a hot rock sauna than with an infrared home sauna.

Added Convenience And Ease

Beyond the health and energy cost benefits, an infrared sauna is also more convenient and less expensive to assemble. The heat is concentrated on the body, which means less energy loss through the sauna construction itself. While traditional sauna rooms typically require brick and mortar style assembly an infrared sauna does not. Comparatively speaking, there are very few working parts to an infrared sauna which also means that you can enjoy greater freedom when deciding on design and size of sauna room construction. Even portable saunas using infrared technology have proven highly effective.

Infrared Home Saunas And More

Infrared home saunas have quickly become the product of choice with anybody looking for a safe, affordable, and more convenient alternative to a traditional steam sauna. Physiotherapists and other health care professionals have also realised the added benefits that infrared has to offer implementing their use in sports centers, hospitals, and other healthcare establishments. Reduced running costs combined with less expensive purchase costs mean they work out considerably cheaper as well as more convenient with greater benefits. It’s little wonder, then, that more and more people are buying infrared home saunas than ever before.
