Woods for Woodworking
There is a wide range of wood that can be used by the woodworker. While there are different types of wood they all fall into one of three categories, being, man-made woods, softwoods and hardwoods.
Of the thousands of natural timbers in existence (natural timbers being the hardwoods and softwoods) there are only 60 to 80 that are commonly used. Of the manufactured woods (man-made woods) there are only a half a dozen that are commonly used by the woodworker.
The type of wood that you use will depend on the texture you after, your budget, type of project and availability. As there is such a variety of woods available you will always find the type of wood that you are looking for. Descriptions of the three categories of timber, softwoods, hardwoods and man-made woods are contained below:
Hardwoods
Hardwoods come in a wide range of textures and colors and as such are the preferred timber used by furniture makers. As there is a large variety of hardwoods available it is not practical to list them all here, however, a few of them are:
Beech
Beech is a light, strong and hard wood and as a result is a very popular wood. Beech comes in a whitish color and has a fine texture and it is known to be easy to work with. The wood also glues easily and bends exceptionally well.
Oak
There are a few varieties of oak with the European variety generally being yellow in color and the American variety being a pink to reddish color. Oak has pronounced pores and a sturdy and durable quality and as such makes it popular for use in larger pieces of furniture such as lounges and cabinets.
Mahogany
Mahogany is known for its distinctive coarse to medium grain and reddish-brown color. As the timber is extremely popular in furniture making it does tend to be hard to find and expensive.

Softwoods
Softwoods are younger trees and are generally only 20 to 25 years old. Listed below are some of the more popular softwoods:
Pine
There are a few different varieties of pine that are found around the world and most regions will have at least one. Pine comes in a creamy yellow or clean white color and is inexpensive, easy to use and in plentiful supply. Pine is a fine to medium textured timber with a straight grain and can be knotty.
Cedar
Cedar is a fine textured, straight grained timber that has a honey color and is known for its aromatic fragrance. The most popular of all the cedar varieties if the Cedar of Lebanon and is popular in cabinet making.

Man-made Woods
There are many timbers that have become rarer and more expensive and as a result we have become more reliant on man-made woods. Man-made woods are more durable, cheaper and available than their natural wood equivalents. The woodworker has a range of man-made woods available to purchase, including:
Plywood
Plywood is manufactured to have a high strength-to-weight ratio and comes is a variety of shapes, sizes and thickness. Plywood is made by laminating thin sheets of wood together with the grains of each sheet being at right angles to each other.
MDF
MDF is short for Medium Density Fibreboard and is manufactured from tiny particles of wood that are fixed together using resin. The wood has a smooth dense surface and is available in a variety of sizes, shapes and thicknesses.
