All About Growing With Your Family
Parents are not really ‘grown ups.’ Parents are growing and adapting to change just as much as their children are. In fact, when children come into our lives, everything in our life has to grow with them, including our living environment.
While a one bedroom apartment was alright when you were just dating, it gets pretty cramped when baby comes along! You move to a larger apartment or start looking for a home to buy.
The little car you love becomes somehow smaller, too. You hang onto it while your graco snugride infant car seat is still being used, but when the child grows and you have to pack both your growing child and all your groceries into the tiny space, it’s time to look for a larger car.
You will probably outgrow your first house, too. While the bedrooms were fine for your child when he was five or six, when he gets older, it begins to look more like a closet. Before that bedroom drives you and your growing child crazy, think about different ways to maximize the available space. If you have been putting off buying your child a computer workstation because you had no place to put it, now you can put it under the loft. Kids really love sleeping in lofts, too, so nobody will be complaining about it.
As parents, we have to be forever adaptable. There are many ‘How to be a parent’ books on the market, but they are never really applicable to any couple’s particular needs. All of us are unique and we have to learn as we go. Life rarely go according to plan and if there’s one thing we can count on, it is change.
If you are the parent of a teenager, the personal computer and internet probably didn’t play as large a part in your upbringing as it does in the lives of teenagers today. While there may have been many similarities in your teenager years, there are many differences, as well. As a parent, you have had to keep up with the changing times and grow even as your children have grown.
These few examples point out just a few of the challenges parents face every day. In a lot of different ways, life is like a scary ride in an amusement park that springs surprises on us. In many other ways, it’s like earning a PhD in parenthood – it’s always an education. Bake yourself and your spouse a nice cake. Use your heart cake pan – you deserve to make every day Valentine’s Day!
