My First College Dorm Experience
My first college dorm experience was not anything unusual. I was dropped off by my parents along with the other thousands of freshman venturing into the halls of higher education. I was as prepared as I could be having excelled in all my prep classes and exams. However, I was still a bit anxious because the classes would be more competitive and I would also have to deal with living on my own.
For recreation, I packed my alvarez acoustic guitar. This was my little escape. When strumming away on the strings I not only felt relaxed but also was able to stimulate my creative juices. School work was more than enough to exercise the left side of my brain. This provided a little balance.
Another hobby I planned on pursuing was keeping scrapbook pages of my college experience. The book would be a great way to mark my progression over the years. Also, it would be ideal as a way to remember this time years from now. I got the idea from my parents. They each showed me their personal scrapbooks in order to give me an idea of what to expect.
Aside from studies, I also had to learn how to live on my own. My mother particularly thought it would be good to do some cooking as a change from the fat and preservatives from the college cafeteria. I also did not want to gain weight as freshman have been know to do. I had a meal plan, however, i was afraid i would not be able to control my self after seeing the mounds of food. To help with my cooking, my mom packed an anodized cookware set.
The rest of my luggage was primarily filled with clothes. There were summer clothes, winter clothes, and everything in between. The remainder was comprised of books, sound system, computer, and miscellaneous sports equipment. I enjoyed being physically active, particularly, playing football, basketball, and even throwing a frisbee now and again.
As I entered the doorway of my dorm room, I was amazed at how small it appeared. The closet was very small in stature. Clearly, there was not enough space to store or place all my belongings. I had to purchase some furniture. There was a bed, a mattress, and a wooden desk. I would need to purchase some accessories to furnish the room.
The most startling part of the freshman dorm experience is the communal bath. The showers and bathroom are not only communal but also coed. I was expected to grow not only intellectually but also socially. However, I was looking forward to the challenge.
