Baby Safety Gates: Your Special One Deserves It
As your child gets mobile, it becomes important to look for a safe place where the toddler can explore that new-found mobility. In a 2007 study conducted by Karin Mack, Ph.D., it was established that over 20,000 infants visited the emergency department annually for staircase related injuries. The simplest way to prevent these injuries is to ensure that stairways are blocked at the top and bottom by the right kind of baby safety gates.
Types of Baby Safety Gates
There are essentially two types of baby safety gates:
Pressure-Mounted:The advantage with these gates is that they can be fixed in a few minutes, without using any special tools. For safe installation, place the gate at the opening, expand the adjustable feet and tighten it against the wood. These are typically used in between rooms, hallways and at the bottom of the staircase.
Hardware-Mounted:This type is mounted (with the help of screws) into a wall or a wood post. These gates are ideal for installation at the top of a staircase, since they have integral swing-stop mechanisms that would stop the gate from swinging out. These can be used in combination with mounting kits and care must be taken that the gate has no fixed horizontal bar to cause a tripping hazard.
Pressure-mounted gates are the more popular option of the two as they can be simply wedged to a door frame and are comparatively less expensive. They are perfectly suited for traveling. However, experts warn against using this kind of gate at the top of a staircase, since there are chances of children tripping over the bottom rail and falling down.
Considerations before Purchasing Baby Safety Gates
Ensure that the baby safety gates are sturdy enough to protect your child. If there are chances of your toddler reaching over the gate to grab something, purchase taller gates. You will also have to find out if the wall on which you will mount the gate is hollow or a drywall. If it is the latter case, you might need to purchase extra hardware because screws that come in the package are meant for wooden walls.
One should also be wary of purchasing used safety gates. The accordion-style expansion gates with crisscross diamond shapes must be avoided since they have a tendency of ensnaring clothing and pacifier strings.
