Convertible Baby

Convertible Baby
How do you move a baby in a convertible car seat?

So from what I understand the difference between a infant carrier and convertible car seat is that the carrier basically has the handle on it in which you can easily take the baby with you. So, if you just purchase the convertible car seat, how do you take the baby outside the car with you if it does not have the handle.
what about when you grocery shop and need to bring them in the store??

Did you know that a baby bucket, the ones with the handles, should not be put onto a shopping cart or used to carry the baby around except for short times (say, going in or out of the house because of a storm or something)? Shopping carts are plain dangerous with an infant seat on top. They’re not made to do that and can tip, baby and all. It happens a LOT and babies DIE from it. The AAP has a long-standing recommendation to avoid shopping carts altogether with your kids if possible, but especially to avoid using an infant car seat on the shopping cart.

They have found that babies left to sleep in a car seat have a harder time breathing than those sleeping in a normal bed. They have urged parents not to leave babies sleeping in a car seat (especially for the first 4 months when they have little to no neck control) but to take them out. Babies have died sleeping in car seats for long periods of time (there are parents who put the seats into the crib and leave baby sleeping in there… that’s what I’m talking about.) The car seat is the safest place for your baby in traveling. It’s not for anything else.

So what’s the convenience? I mean, if you follow these safety restrictions then you use the car seat in the car, and then maybe for loading and unloading. Well, the infant car seat is made more closely to the baby’s form, so it’s typically safer for newborns until about 6 months. Also if the weather is cold or hot you can take the seat out, get it in the house, then take your baby out. The car seat, kept in the house, doesn’t become hot in the sun. The baby, loaded in the car seat and taken quickly out to the car then put in the car, is spending less time in the hot car or in the cold.

We don’t take the car seat out of the base though. My son is in a Snugride 35, so it’s a baby bucket, but we never take it out of the seat-base except to adjust the seat. I bought it because I like the easy recline feature (making it easy to get that perfect safe recline for baby) and because it’s comfortable with a huge hood, plus it has a high weight limit. We use a baby-chest-carrier (ours is the Ergo Sport) for grocery shopping.

I LOVE this arrangement. With my daughter, we used the bucket all the time, and we put it on top of the shopping cart with no thought (but when I found out the danger we stopped immediately.) It was heavy, adding 12-15lbs to your baby (so my son now, at 14lbs, would be lugging a 30lb bucket… ouch.) It was bulky. It was annoying. Even when I did put it on shopping carts it restricted your field of vision so you couldn’t see around the stupid thing.

With my son, he snuggles against my chest and snoozes. He looks around and coos at people, he’s not hidden up on the shopping cart he’s at their level where he can see them and they can see him. He smiles up at me and laughs at me. I can kiss him at any time, he’s right there, kissing range. :) My arms are free to move things and put things in the cart (or even carry my toddler on my hip…), I’m not constantly trying to keep an eye on the cart or a hand on the cart because of the precious cargo. In bad weather, he’s cuddled against me, protected by a sunshade on his carrier. It’s wonderful to be honest, no extra weight, no worrying about trying to carry groceries AND the bucket, no trying to balance things… just strap him on and go. I can even use the small carts or the carry basket if my daughter isn’t with us and it’s a short trip. :)

So… what do you do? What I do. You carry the baby, or wear them, or put them in a stroller. Far more convenient and less of a pain in the back.
