Britax Duo

Britax Duo
My toddler is 2.9 y/o and can undo his carseat buckle. Help!?

We have a Britax Duo and a MaxiCosi Tobi and he manages to undo both of them. We really don’t know what to do and it’s terrifying.

Can some kind soul offer advice as to how we can prevent him doing this and putting himself and everyone at risk?

Many thanks.

That’s a tough one, the closest thing I had was my toddler at 2.5 -3.5 yrs old complained the belts were too tight, and she wanted it completely loose and dangling.

I slowly introduced concepts in a way she could understand, as far as getting hurt and going to the hospital in an ambulance meant. (But we had an advantage since she had been to the hospital for an injury before via ambulance.) This helped a little then I showed her dummies being crash tested for child restraints on youtube to her, and she started to understand more.

The other measure I did which I don’t recommend though is I drove around with her in the car and let her know we should make sure her belt is tight and working. You know where this is going, I would drive to about 15 mph and firmly press the brakes on the car so she could experience negative g loading into her belts firmly. She just giggled but understood that if she did not have the belt she would hit the seat in front of her and get hurt.

We also took away TV and Treats everytime she had a tantrum about the belts being too tight.

It took a lot of disciplining but by the time she turned 4 she understands why it needs to be tight and now she buckles herself in and she raises her chest strap bar to her shoulders on her own now.
